Portrait of Cheah Bing Wen, software developer based in Singapore.

I'm Cheah Bing Wen. I build websites and applications for businesses in Singapore, from the first call through to handover. Usually the only developer on the project, and almost never the only person on it.

I came up through enterprise backend work: production APIs, data models, and the reliability engineering that keeps a platform standing when a few hundred people are on it at once. That was a team, with all the code review, handovers and arguing about interfaces that implies. It is where I learned the difference between software that demos well and software that survives real users.

Going out on my own was a bet that plenty of businesses do not need an agency wrapped around the work. They need someone who can hold the whole problem in their head, decide quickly, and reply the same day. That has mostly held up.

Most projects arrive with other people already attached. On PLAY Films I work with the designer on the project, which is the arrangement I would pick every time. The visual calls are better in their hands than mine, and the site is better for it. There is usually someone client-side who owns the content, and a hosting or registrar support desk somewhere in the background. Sorting out the PLAY Films domain took a run of emails with the hosting side and no code at all. That part is the job too.

What that means for you: no account manager in the middle, no junior quietly handed your project, and no arrangement where you need me in order to keep your own website online. Every account is transferred into your name at handover.

What I will tell you honestly: when you do not need what you are asking for. A mobile website instead of an app, an off-the-shelf tool instead of a custom build, a content fix instead of a redesign. Losing a project is cheaper for me than delivering one you regret.

Experience

Where the judgement came from.

  1. Present

    Independent developer

    Freelance · Singapore

Websites, web apps and cross-platform mobile builds for SMEs and founders, often alongside a client's designer or in-house marketing lead. Clients own every account at handover.

  2. 2025

    Backend and platform developer

    AtTalentFit · recruitment SaaS

Production APIs, data modelling and reliability work on AtTalentFit, as part of the team that shipped the recruitment platform used by enterprise HR teams. Other developers built against the interfaces I owned.

Stack

Deliberately mainstream.

Everything here is well documented and widely used, so another developer can work alongside me on it or pick it up after me without a handover ritual. That is a feature, not a lack of ambition.
